Does KDi sell hot rolled steel plate, bar, or sheet?
No. KDi is a fabricator, not a steel distributor or service center. We source hot rolled steel as part of our manufacturing process and use it to produce finished parts, assemblies, and structural products. If you need a fabricated component or structure made from hot rolled steel, we can help — but we do not supply raw material stock.
When is hot rolled steel the right choice over cold rolled steel?
Hot rolled steel is typically the better fit for structural applications, heavy weldments, and parts where tight surface finish tolerances aren't required. It's less expensive to produce than cold rolled, bends and welds more easily, and is available in heavier gauges and structural profiles. Cold rolled steel is the better choice when dimensional precision, surface finish, or tighter tolerances are critical. KDi works with both materials and can help determine which is right for your application.
What grades of hot rolled steel does KDi work with?
KDi works with structural and fabrication grades, including ASTM A36 — one of the most widely used structural grades due to its excellent weldability — as well as A572 for higher-strength structural applications. Grade selection depends on your load requirements, fabrication method, and end-use environment. Our engineering team can help you identify the right specification before production begins.
Does hot rolled steel require surface preparation before welding or coating?
Yes. Hot rolled steel develops a layer of mill scale during the cooling process. For welding, this scale is typically removed at the joint area to ensure proper fusion and weld integrity. For powder coating or painting, surface preparation, such as blasting or grinding, improves adhesion and the long-term performance of the finish. KDi manages these preparation steps in-house as part of our standard fabrication for industrial applications.
