Access Control Systems
Where a catwalk, platform, or mezzanine has a ladder or stair opening, that opening needs to close automatically once a worker passes through. We fabricate custom self-closing safety gates, including B-shaped swing gates, sized to the opening and finished to match the surrounding guardrail. These access control systems are a standard part of a compliant catwalk platform handrail layout wherever a ladder, stair, or hoist opening interrupts the guardrail run.

What height do OSHA-compliant guardrails need to be?
OSHA 1910.29 requires a top rail height of 42 inches, plus or minus 3 inches, above the walking or working surface. A midrail is required halfway between the top rail and the surface unless another structural member serves the same purpose.
Do I need kickplates on every elevated platform?
A kickplate, or toeboard, is required wherever tools, materials, or equipment could fall from an elevated surface onto someone below, or wherever the applicable code for your facility specifies one. We size kickplate height to the standard your project falls under.
